Publishers Criteria for ELA/Literacy

The ELA writers of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have written two documents (grades K-2 and 3-12) to guide publishers and curriculum developers in ensuring that curricular and instructional materials align with the new standards adopted by the State Board in August 2010. The documents focus on the most critical concepts of the CCSS in reading, writing, speaking and listening and language and are intended to delineate “what matters most in the standards.”

CCSS ELA: Adolescent Literacy—Foundations for Writing

In the document, Writing Next, the authorspresents the results of a large-scale statistical review of research on the effects of specific types of writing interventions; they specify teaching techniques for improving the quality of adolescent students’ writing.

CCSS ELA: Adolescent Literacy; the Reading and Writing Connection

Writing to Read draws on statistical reviews of research to highlight writing techniques shown to enhance students’ reading. The report provides evidence responding to the following questions: Does writing about material students read enhance their reading comprehension? Does teaching writing strengthen students' reading skills? Does increasing how much students write improve how well they read?

The International Reading Association

TheInternational Reading Associationwebsite is a great venue for educational research and resources for classroom practice.Below is the link to their Common Core Section, which includes book and journal lists, instructional resources, professional development opportunities, and external links to relevant Common Core issues and partnerships. This site provides free access to a wealth of information and resources; membership includes additional access to IRA published journals.

National Council of Teachers of English

The National Council of Teachers of English is an American professional organization dedicated to "improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education.

Text Project, Inc.

TextProject, Inc. is a non-profit corporation founded in 2010 in the state of California. It formalizes a decade-plus of ongoing work by its founder, president and CEO,Elfrieda H. (Freddy) Hiebert, to bring beginning and struggling readersto high levels of literacy through a variety of strategies and tools, particularly the texts used for reading instruction.

Center on Instruction

The Center on Instruction offers materials and resources on Literacy and English Language Arts that help educators improve academic outcomes for students, address the problem of struggling readers, and meet instructional challenges of diversity in students' ability and readiness in learning to read.

The Literacy Design Collaborative
