BEST Plus 2.0

Registration for the BEST Plus 2.0 assessment training for new administrators is now open.

This training will prepare participants to administer the BEST Plus 2.0 assessment of English language proficiency of adult English language learners.

Date: Friday, December 1, 2017

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. with a lunch break. PLEASE BRING A BAG LUNCH.

Location: Vermont Agency of Education, Barre, Room 423 (4th Floor)

Note: Space is limited.

Who should attend?

  • Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) staff who have never been certified to administer the assessment before, but need to assess the speaking and listening skills of English language learners.
  • AEL staff who had been certified to administer the assessment previously, but did not maintain certification by attending a Refresher. Those who attended the Refresher in May of 2017 do not need to attend this training, but are welcome to come for practice and review.
  • Migrant education staff, refugee resettlement staff or others who have never been certified to administer the assessment or who would like a review. On a space available basis after AEL staff have registered.

AEL staff: please register by November 17, 2017 in DataWorks.

Meal Pattern, Menu Planning, and Meal Counting for New School Foodservice Managers

Vermont Child Nutrition Programs will be holding 3 trainings around the state in November for brand new school foodservice managers who were unable to attend this year’s Summer Institute.  This 3 hour training will cover some essential topics for new school foodservice managers.  Learn what meal components schools must offer to create reimbursable meals in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Programs (SBP), how to create a menu that meets the requirements, how to determine whether a meal is a reimbursable meal, and how to correctly count and claim student meals.  This training is free, and will count as 3 hours of credit towards the professional standards requirements for school meals programs.

Note: Experienced school foodservice mangers and new folks who were able to attend “Orientation to School Nutrition Management” in August may attend as well, but please know that this training will be kept to a very basic level and we will not be discussing more advanced topics.

CACFP New Meal Pattern Training

Join this all-day intensive session to prepare your program for the changes to the Child and Adult Care Food Program meal pattern that will take effect October 1, 2017. We will discuss the updated changes to the meal pattern in depth with hands on activities and recipes to prepare you for the implementation of the new meal pattern. The training will be held in-person at our office in Barre. The trainings will be from 9:00 am ~ 3:30 pm, and participants will earn 6 hours of continuing education credits. You will be on your own for lunch from 12 until 12:45. This training is free!

Visual Art Resource Sharing

Audience: Visual Art Teachers

Please join us for a professional learning day at the Vermont Agency of Education on Friday, November 3, 2017, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, where participants will have the opportunity to share and learn about a variety of resources from their fellow visual art teachers. Prior to the day, educators will select and upload a resource that they use in the classroom to be shared with the larger group. Time will be provided to explore and collaborate. Topics for sharing may include: curriculum, instruction, and assessment aligned with the National Core Arts Standards, performance assessment, learning targets, learning platform hacks, personalization, arts integration, proficiencies/PBGRs in the art room, transferable skills, contemporary practice, Teaching for Artistic Behavior, S.T.E.A.M, transferable skills, etc. Content of the sharing day will be participant driven. Participants will be introduced to #VTOpen group on OER Commons, Vermont’s open educational resource site, as an option for staying connected to resources. Art teachers K-12 are welcome with an acknowledgement that any great resource can be adapted to any age group and vertical alignment of arts programs benefits all students. Sample Arts Proficiencies/PBGRs Launch and Work Session

Audience: Arts Teachers and Administrators

Please join us for a professional learning day centered around proficiencies in the arts room on Thursday, November 2, 2017, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Vermont Agency of Education. Sample Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirements with Performance Indicators for Music, Visual Art, Dance, and Theatre are posted on the Agency of Education website. (Media Arts coming soon). They are aligned with the National Core Arts Standards. This session is for Arts educators PreK-16 and from all five arts disciplines. Teams are welcome to attend, as well as, curriculum directors and other administrators. The launch and workday will include an introduction and discussion of the new state sample Arts Proficiencies/PBGRs and sharing and collaboration to write learning targets, proficiency scales, and/or rubrics. The Agency of Education is offering a free opportunity to engage in a collaborative workgroup series with the purpose of learning and applying the continuous improvement process for developing, implementing, and submitting continuous improvement plans.  There are three sessions in this learning series. 

Organizing and Planning for Continuous Improvement Using an Improvement Science Approach

Content: During each workgroup sessions, participants will engage in collaborative learning about the improvement science approach to continuous improvement, as well as the processes and practices within the phases of the continuous improvement process.

Audience: Ideally SU/SD teams comprised of the superintendent and/or directors of curriculum, a principal, and at least one educator. Maximum 5 per team.

Dates: September 7, 2017; December 5, 2017; March 8, 2018 - December & March dates have been CANCELLED

Each session will be held from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM   Please come prepared with your own beverages and food for the day or feel free to purchase locally.  There is a limit of 35 people per session; an additional series will be added if needed.

Cost: FREE

Design: In-person sessions include co-learning and co-design opportunities, followed by an action period during which time participants apply learning in their school settings through developing their continuous improvement plans.
