SCHOOL DATA & REPORTS: ENROLLMENT REPORTS: FY 2001 PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLLMENT REPORT     TABLE 1: STUDENT ENROLLMENT SURVEY: A STATEWIDE SUMMARY BY GRADE, ETHNICITY AND GENDER     Table 1 (below) provides the statewide summary of Vermont Public School enrollment numbers by grade, gender, and ethnicity (membership count of students as of October 1, 2000). Statewide summary of Vermont Public School enrollment numbers by grade, gender, and ethnicity: Total Vermont enrollment for FY01 is 102,049 students. Males and Females across all ethnic categories are almost equally divided in enrollment numbers with 52,647 males and 49,402 females. FY01 ethnic enrollment for categories "Black", "Hispanic", "American Indian or Alaskan-Native", "Asian" and "Hawaiian or Pacific Islander" is 3,736. Enrollment numbers peaked in FY78, then declined for seven years. Beginning in FY86 enrollment numbers began increasing again, peaking in FY97. During this twelve-year period the Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) was 1.4%. Secondary includes grades 7-12, Adult Without Diploma, Post Graduate, Adult With Diploma, and Secondary Ungraded. ** Please note that for School Year 1997-98, Bellows Free Academy of St. Albans also included 25 in Preschool.       Figure 1 Vermont Public School Elementary & Secondary Enrollment Numbers - FY77 to FY01 Figure 1 graphically presents a twenty-five year trend of Vermont elementary and secondary enrollment numbers. Elementary enrollment numbers were highest in FY77 with 62,332 students, falling to a low of 47,411 in FY84. From FY84 to FY96 elementary numbers rose at a CAGR of 8.1%. Since FY96 elementary numbers have been declining at a CAGR of 1.88%. In FY01 elementary enrollment decreased 3.02% (1697 students) from the FY00 count. Historically Vermont secondary public enrollment numbers have remained significantly lower than the elementary numbers. Peak secondary enrollment occurred during FY80 with 49,309 students from both public and independent secondary acting as public schools. A decline in the public secondary enrollment took place from FY81 to FY91, while secondary numbers from the five independent secondary schools acting, as public schools remained relatively constant at around 3,000 students. From FY91 to FY01 secondary enrollment has been increasing at a CAGR of 1.5%. In FY01 secondary enrollment decreased by -1.8% (823 students) from the FY00 count. The decrease in elementary and secondary enrollment numbers for FY01 is in part due to a new method of collecting data, as mentioned in the Executive Summary.           **Includes the 5 independent high schools acting as public: Bellows Free Academy (St. Albans), Burr & Burton Seminary, Lyndon Institute, St. Johnsbury Academy, and Thetford Academy.     TABLE 3: VERMONT PUBLIC SCHOOL ETHNIC ENROLLMENT SUMMARY - FY77 TO FY01       Enrollment reported amongst all minorities in Vermont has risen substantially over the last twenty-five years.
