Figure 1
Vermont Public School Elementary & Secondary Enrollment Numbers - FY77 to FY01

Figure 1 graphically presents a twenty-five year trend of Vermont elementary and secondary enrollment numbers.

Elementary enrollment numbers were highest in FY77 with 62,332 students, falling to a low of 47,411 in FY84. From FY84 to FY96 elementary numbers rose at a CAGR of 8.1%. Historically Vermont secondary public enrollment numbers have remained significantly lower than the elementary numbers. Peak secondary enrollment occurred during FY80 with 49,309 students from both public and independent secondary acting as public schools. A decline in the public secondary enrollment took place from FY81 to FY91, while secondary numbers from the five independent secondary schools acting, as public schools remained relatively constant at around 3,000 students. From FY91 to FY01 secondary enrollment has been increasing at a CAGR of 1.5%. In FY01 secondary enrollment decreased by -1.8% (823 students) from the FY00 count.

The decrease in elementary and secondary enrollment numbers for FY01 is in part due to a new method of collecting data, as mentioned in the Executive Summary.
