The Vermont Teacher/Staff Report presents data on student/teacher ratios, teacher and staff full-time equivalencies (FTEs), and salaries in the elementary and secondary school system. These data are used to calculate class size and average salaries in Vermont, and are reported to the National Center for Education Statistics and to the Vermont School Boards Association.

  Purpose
The FY 2002 Vermont Teacher/Staff Report presents data on student/teacher ratios, teacher and staff full-time equivalencies (FTEs), and salaries in the elementary and secondary school system. These data are used to calculate class size and average salaries in Vermont, and are reported to the National Center for Education Statistics and to the Vermont School Boards Association.

Data used in this report were collected in the Vermont Department of Education’s 2001-2002 Fall Data Collection. This collection is designed to gather information on students, teachers and staff in each of the state’s 382 public schools, 5 "public acting" independent schools, and 60 supervisory districts/unions.

For the purposes of this report the term "school" will be used in reference to the responding public and public acting schools which submitted data.
   
  Teacher and Support Staff FTEs
Vermont public schools and supervisory unions reported a total of 18,273.53 FTE teachers and support staff, compared to 18,098.53 in FY 2001. The number of FTEs providing direct instructional services also increased to 12,739.83 in FY 2002 from 12,611.32 in FY 2001. In FY 2001 direct instructional services accounted for 69.68% of the FTEs for all school and supervisory union staff. In FY 2002 direct instructional services FTEs increased to 69.72%. FY 2002 is the second year that vocational teacher FTEs were collected separately. They account for 1.7% of direct instruction.

  Women fill the majority of direct instructional positions in Vermont. For FY 2002, 71.7% of the teachers and 92.6% of the teacher aides are female. Administrative positions are predominantly male. In FY 2002, 58.5% of the principals and 74.8% of the superintendents are male.
   
 
   
 
   
  Student/Teacher Ratios
For FY 2002, Vermont’s average student/teacher ratio is 11.77, compared to 12.13 in FY 2001. Student/teacher ratios ranged from 6 to 19.61. Vermont’s student/teacher ratio is below the National Center for Education Statistics national average projected for FY 2001 of 15.1.
   
 
   
  Average Teacher and Teacher Aide Salaries Per FTE
In FY 2002, the average classroom teacher salary in Vermont is $39,166, an increase of $912 or 2.4% from the FY 2001 average. In FY 2001 there was an increase of 1.4% and in FY 2000 there was an increase of 2.70%. According to the most recent data available from the National Center for Education Statistics, Vermont ranked 28th out of 50 states and the District of Columbia on average teacher salaries for FY 2000. The average teacher aide salary in FY 2002 is $11,780. This is an increase of $623 or 5.58% from the FY 2001 average.
