Public Comment Opportunity: Model Truancy Protocols
During the last legislative session the Commissioner of Education was charged with publishing model truancy protocols on the department's Web site by September 30, 2009. The commissioner has chosen to publish two protocols for Rutland County and Chittenden County that resulted from collaborative truancy prevention projects in these counties. The commissioner is also charged with recommending any necessary legislation concerning truancy to the house and senate committees on education by December 15, 2010. By July 1, 2010, all supervisory unions in every county must adopt consistent and comprehensive truancy policies. The commissioner is therefore eliciting public comments on the two published protocols, which have some significant similarities and differences. The comment process is intended to determine regional differences in resources and approaches to truancy. These comments will inform any recommendations that the commissioner makes to the Vermont legislature regarding truancy legislation.
