The center works collaboratively with schools, communities and institutions of higher education in preparing professionals to help youth make healthy choices and reduce risk-taking behavior.

Hundreds of education resources supported by agencies across the U.S. government. Resources cover student activities, research and materials for most subjects and grade levels.
   
  Model Policies
Model policies provide guidance, direction and recommended standards to help school administrators develop general school policy statements. At times, the department is specifically tasked by the Vermont State Board of Education or the Vermont Legislature to create model policies that address specific issues related to students and schools. Other recommended and/or mandatory policies are developed by the Vermont School Boards Association, often in conjunction with department staff.

Standards Into Action
The Standards Into Action online tool helps educators ensure students are learning the essential knowledge and skills outlined in Vermont's Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities. Using this tool, teachers can create standards-based units of study more quickly, share high-quality resources with each other and assess student progress in a systematic manner. (See update below.)

NOTE: The Standards into Action site will close down permanently on or before June 30, 2008. The site is no longer technically supportable and providing that it continues to run, it will be available until June 30, 2008. The department has worked to migrate the instructional content of all users who responded to queries to the Riverdeep Learning Village site. Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey for 2007Clicking this link will open a new browser window and take you off the department's Web site.
Every two years since 1993, the Department of Health and the Department of Education have sponsored a survey of Vermont students. The Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) measures the prevalence of behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disease, and injury among youth. The YRBS is part of a larger effort to help communities promote the "resiliency" of young people by reducing high risk behaviors and increasing healthy behaviors. Vermont’s Odyssey of the Mind
program focuses on helping students develop divergent, out-of-the-box thinking skills. Teams of students work for several months to solve challenging, but fun, long-term problems in a range of subject areas. Students also practice creatively solving a variety of shorter, spontaneous problems. Long-term problem team solutions are judged at regional and state tournaments. Teams placing first advance to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition.

VITA-Learn is a statewide organization for people interested in supporting the integration of information technology in Vermont schools.
