Model
Policies
Model policies provide guidance, direction and recommended standards to help
school administrators develop general school policy statements. At times, the department
is specifically tasked by the Vermont State Board of Education or the Vermont Legislature
to create model policies that address specific issues related to students and schools.
Other recommended and/or mandatory policies are developed by the Vermont School Boards
Association, often in conjunction with department staff. |

Vermont Youth Risk Behavior
Survey (YRBS) for 2009
Every two years since 1993, the Department of Health's Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs and the department have sponsored the Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The YRBS measures the prevalence of behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disease and injury among youth. The YRBS is part of a larger effort to help communities increase the “resiliency” of young people by reducing high risk behaviors and promoting healthy behaviors. View links to additional reports for 1995 through 2007.

Vermont’s
Odyssey of the Mind™ Program
Vermont’s Odyssey of the Mind™ program focuses on helping
students develop divergent, out-of-the-box thinking skills. Teams of students work
for several months to solve challenging, but fun, long-term problems in a range of
subject areas. Students also practice creatively solving a variety of shorter, spontaneous
problems. Long-term problem team solutions are judged at regional and state tournaments.
