English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Learning Works Centers offer ESOL instruction through small group and one-on-one instruction, emphasizing a communicative approach to language acquisition. Learners are able to quickly acquire basic skills in English language to meet needs in workplace, family, and community life.
EL/Civics
Civics education is designed to prepare immigrants for successful participation in community life, and satisfactory completion of citizenship requirements.
Foundational Skills
Adults seeking to acquire or improve their skills in math, reading and/or writing are able to access instructional services throughout the State at no cost. Today, computer literacy is also considered a foundational skill and one which the adult education and literacy system addresses.
Essential Workplace Skills
The soft skills essential to success in any workplace can be acquired with assistance through the Learning Works system. Assessment is also available to assist in determining readiness for specific occupations.
Equipped for the Future (EFF) Standards
The Department of Education and the adult education and literacy providers have adopted EFF as the primary framework for standards, student goal-setting, curriculum, instruction and assessment. The EFF framework aligns with Vermont’s collective philosophy and vision for how education can support adult learners to function in their roles as workers, citizens and family members.
