Established by the State Board of Education in 1996, the Vermont Common Assessment System (CAS) evaluates student performance in the state’s schools, based on Vermont’s Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities, with the goal of improving teaching and learning. Statewide assessments include:
- The New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) mathematics, reading and writing assessments are administered in grades 3-8 and 11 each October. In 2012 the testing dates will be October 1-23 and pickup will occur on October 24.
- The NECAP science assessment is administered to all students in grades 4, 8 and 11 between May 7-24, 2012 with pickup on May 25.

Student
Performance Results on State Alternate Assessments Reported by Subgroups
The No Child Left Behind Act requires Vermont to report alternate assessment student
performance annually by subcategories, including gender; major racial/ethnic categories;
students with disabilities; economically disadvantaged students; students with limited
English proficiency; and migrant students. Reported results are for alternate assessment,
valid tests and are only publicly reported when there are more than 10 students in
the group. Alternate assessments are Life skills, Stanford Diagnostic, and Out-of-level
New Standards Reference Exams (NSREs). Differences in sample sizes among groups are
the result of missing demographic data.
NOTE: Schools that did not administer any alternate assessments do not have reports
(indicated by N/A).

Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) Reports/Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Reports
SAT and AP test scores for public high school students are no longer maintained on this page. For general statewide information, go to the College Board Web site using the link below:
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
Also known as "the Nation's Report Card," NAEP is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP does not provide scores for individual students or schools; instead, it offers results regarding subject-matter achievement for populations of students (e.g., fourth-graders) and groups within those populations (e.g., female students, Hispanic students). National and state NAEP results are based on a sample of such student populations.
- Vermont NAEP Performance Results
Use the summaries below to view Vermont’s performance on the most recent administrations of NAEP. The reports include national results, Vermont state results, comparisons to other states’ and past years’ performance and results for subgroups of students.
To view more comprehensive NAEP results (including results from other states) as well as sample test questions and details of the assessment administration, visit http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/. OSL
