This report by the Sexual Violence Prevention Task Force (SVPTF), a legislatively defined project of the Anti-Violence Partnership at the University of Vermont, was compiled from responses to surveys distributed in the fall of 2007 to K-12 schools statewide and community-based prevention education agencies working in the schools. The data reported represents activities during the 2006-2007 academic year.

This January 15, 2006 report summarizes the status of implementation of Act 161 of the 2004 Legislature, an act promoting wellness in Vermont schools.

This sample comprehensive HIV policy for schools, updated in 2006, addresses rights of faculty/staff and students; issues related to confidentiality and discrimination; education and instruction; legal references and resources for assistance and information. Appendices include recommended best practices for HIV prevention education and confidentiality; HIV Universal Precautions
procedures; sample confidentiality procedures; and consent forms.

The Vermont Board of Nursing (VBN) has issued their position about insulin pump delegation practices for school nurses. This position statement will be added to the School Health Services Standards of Practice manual as an addendum.

This document is the result of the collaboration between the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets and the departments of Education and Health, as required by Act 161 of the 2003 session of the Vermont Legislature. The guidelines are based on the recommendations of nationally recognized authorities, including the Surgeon General of the United States, the National Association of State Boards of Education, the American Dietetics Association and the National Association of Sports and Physical Education. In the coming year, all schools participating in the National School Lunch Program will be required to adopt a school wellness policy. The Vermont Nutrition and Fitness Policy Guidelines are provided as a resource for wellness policy development.
   
 

Vermont 2006 School Health Profile Report
The Vermont Department of Education employs the School Health Profiles, a data collection instrument developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to obtain school-based information about current health policies and health education programs. This instrument, designed for use in secondary schools that contain any grades from six through twelve, asks questions of the school administrators and the school health educators. The department collected data in 2002 and again in 2006. The charts in the report provide a comparison of the 2002 and 2006 data sets and are representative of secondary principals and school health educators in Vermont.

As stated in Vermont Act 161, schools have the option to share any data collected about the height and weight of students in kindergarten through grade six with the Vermont Department of Health. Any reporting of data must protect the privacy of individual students. Should your school wish to collect and forward this information, use the link above for a detailed explanation of how to determine a student's BMI percentile, your school's data by grade and where to send this information at the Vermont Department of Health.
   
  Vermont Standards of Practice: School Health Services Manual (2005)
The information in this manual is designed to provide guidance to school administrators and school nurses in the development, implementation and evaluation of school health services. This document is divided into sections alphabetically. Within each section is a statement of purpose, any authorization or legal reference which supports the statement of purpose, required and suggested school nurse and associate school nurse roles, a list of local and national resources and a few sample policies and forms that may be of use. Revisions to manual sections will be made on a yearly basis. NOTE: View ordering information.

This summary report compiles data gathered through three separate phases which examined HIV prevention risks, education, resources and services as well as challenges to effective HIV prevention and suggestions for improvement for the youth population.

  Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey for 2007Clicking this link will open a new browser window and take you off the department's Web site.
Every two years since 1993, the Department of Health and the Department of Education have sponsored a survey of Vermont students. The Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) measures the prevalence of behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disease, and injury among youth. The YRBS is part of a larger effort to help communities promote the "resiliency" of young people by reducing high risk behaviors and increasing healthy behaviors.
