CURRICULUM & ASSESSMENT
(Updated 5/8/08)

OVERVIEW
""

Vermont's Comprehensive Assessment System (CAS) includes both state and local assessments. The curriculum and assessment program supports the development and implementation of state assessments. It also supports professional development networks and other opportunities that focus on the coordination of curriculum, instruction and assessment (both state and local) with the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities and the Grade Expectations. The department's Standards and Assessment Team provides the resources, technical assistance and professional development that support this program.

Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) Information & Training OpportunitiesClicking this link will open a pdf document.
The SEC are practical, efficient tools for obtaining classroom data about math, science or literacy teaching. Online surveys completed by teachers produce visual maps of instruction that can be compared to the Vermont Grade Expectations. The surveys can also provide instructional data to investigate in relation to NECAP results. Over the course of four professional development days, prospective SEC facilitators will receive the tools necessary to introduce colleagues to the SEC, inform teachers about levels of cognitive complexity, administer the SEC, and explore data-driven dialogue. View additional details, registration information and a conference brochure by clicking the link above.

  • SEC Facilitator Toolkit
The following materials are provided to help facilitators develop understanding of the Survey content, levels of cognitive complexity, and data analysis:

Standards Into Action Web Site
This online tool helps educators ensure students are learning the essential knowledge and skills outlined in Vermont's Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities. Using this tool, teachers can create standards-based units of study more quickly, share high-quality resources with each other and assess student progress in a systematic manner. (See update below.)

NOTE: The Standards into Action site will close down permanently on or before June 30, 2008. The site is no longer technically supportable and providing that it continues to run, it will be available until June 30, 2008. The department has worked to migrate the instructional content of all users who responded to queries to the Riverdeep Learning Village site.
