Black History Month Resources
Begun as Negro History Week in 1926 by Harvard scholar Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month’s purpose was to ensure that black history was accurately documented and disseminated. Educators coordinating Black History Month activities – or those wishing to incorporate more black history into their regular instruction – may find the attached list of resources helpful as a starting point in developing their curricula. |

Constitution Day Resource Materials (Updated 8/30/07)
As part of the national effort to reintroduce the U.S. Constitution to America’s students, the Vermont Department of Education has created “The Constitution: A Guide to Teaching and Learning,” a teacher resource guide and student primary source materials. Though Constitution Day falls on September 17 this year, the department views this guide as part of an ongoing civics focus in which the Constitution is embedded in a variety of lessons. These materials are being mailed via CD to any school with fifth-grade students, but are available to all educators and include materials for middle, elementary and high school grade levels. In addition, all schools with fifth-grade students will receive via post mail a printed copy of the Vermont Constitution, the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence for each fifth-grader. Those materials are available below for downloading as PDF* files. If you need them in a different format, contact Sigrid Lumbra at sigrid.lumbra@state.vt.us.

Women’s History Month Resources
In 1981, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution establishing National Women’s History Week. The week was chosen to coincide with International Women’s Day, March 8. In 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since, Congress has passed a resolution for Women’s History Month, and the U.S. president issues a proclamation. |
