Mathematics education in Vermont is currently centered on the Mathematics Grade Expectations (GEs). Mathematics GEs are organized into five areas: arithmetic, number and operations; geometry and measurement; functions and algebra; and data, statistics and probability; and mathematical problem solving and reasoning. Like the Grade Expectations in other content areas, the Mathematics Grade Expectations are more specific statements of the Vermont standards in Vermont Framework of Standards & Learning Opportunities.

Current Initiatives:

  • Vermont Professional Development Network (VPDN) Meeting Schedule for Spring 2008: Mathematics & Science

    The Vermont Mathematics Initiative is a comprehensive three-year master’s degree granting program designed to train elementary teachers to serve as mathematics leaders in their schools and districts.
   
 

Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (SEC) Facilitator Toolkit
The SEC are practical, efficient tools for obtaining classroom data about math, science or literacy teaching. Online surveys completed by teachers produce visual maps of instruction that can be compared to the Vermont Grade Expectations. The surveys can also provide instructional data to investigate in relation to NECAP results.
The following materials are provided to help facilitators develop understanding of the Survey content, levels of cognitive complexity, and data analysis:

Permission to Use Student Work LetterClicking this link will open a pdf document.
The department is always seeking samples of student work to use in professional development with teachers. No student work is used without parental permission. Educators can download this letter for parents to sign, giving permission to use the work of their child for purposes of teacher training. All identifying information is removed from the work before it is used. This document is also available in the following formats:

   
  Calibration CD Update (November 2007)
The 2007 calibration set includes tasks for grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and high school. Each set includes 2 warm up pieces and 10 tasks as well as scores and rationales. The calibration sets offer numerous possibilities for supporting teachers in refining their scoring practices as well as providing opportunities to define professional development needs.
