Act 161 Implementation Report for 2006
This January 15, 2006 report summarizes the status of implementation of Act 161 of the 2004 Legislature, an act promoting wellness in Vermont schools.
Health Education Resource Centers (HERCs)
The Vermont Department of Education operates a Health Education Resource Center (HERC) that maintains a variety of pre-K-12 health education materials. Currently practicing school and community-based health educators may borrow curricula, books, reference resources, models & kits and audio-visual materials.
Professional Development Opportunities for Physical and Health Educators: Summer 2009
This list of professional development opportunities for physical and health educators has been compiled as a service to the field. By sharing this information the Vermont Department of Education is not endorsing these courses. Information available via linked resources should be independently verified. Readers are encouraged to investigate with each institution and/or Educator Licensing to determine if courses are approved for licensure. Heart Rate Monitor Grant Application for High School Physical Education for 2009-2010 (Added 5/28/09)
The department will provide up to $9,000 each for three high schools to purchase and implement heart rate monitors in physical education. (Funding is contingent upon legislative budget approval.) The goals of this competitive grant program are to: 1) document and increase the amount of time high school students spend engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity during physical education; 2) develop student self-knowledge, personal goal setting and fitness planning skills for lifetime physical activity; and 3) develop students’ 21st century skills of tracking, interpreting and evaluating personal physical activity effort with objective, technological measures. Heart Rate Monitor Grant Awards for 2008-2009
Nine schools applied for the 2008-2009 Heart Rate Monitor Grant program. The following three schools were awarded a total of $26,890.00:
- Mount Abraham UHSD (7-12): $8,997.00
- South Royalton School (K-12): $8,893.00
- Williamstown Middle/High School (6-12): $9,000.00
Physical Education Grade Expectations
A grade expectation (GE) is a stated objective that relates directly to a Vermont standard and associated evidences. A GE differentiates performance on content knowledge or skills between adjacent grade levels and describe clearly what students will do to show that they understand a designated concept. As a set, GEs should lead to focused, coherent, and developmentally appropriate instruction without narrowing the curriculum and can be used for local curriculum and assessment development.
