  • Real World Design Challenge for High School StudentsClicking this link will open a new browser window and take you off the department's Web site.
Governor Jim Douglas, Lt. Governor Brian Dubie and Acting Education Commissioner Bill Talbott have joined the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Department of Energy and software companies PTC and Flometrics to announce the first ever Real World Design Challenge. PTC and Flometrics specialize in Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology. The challenge, being issued to Vermont high school students and their teachers, is to utilize software donated by PTC to solve an engineering aerospace challenge involving wing design. The goals of the challenge are to (1) inspire and engage all students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and (2) highlight the potential for future workers in science and engineering fields. For information about Vermont teams participating and for information or questions, contact Peter Drescher at (802) 828-5149 or peter.drescher@state.vt.us.

Vermont E-Learning Project Information & Application Form (PDF)Clicking this link will open a new browser window and take you off the department's Web site.
In mid-summer 2009, a grant was awarded to a collaboration between the Vermont Principals Association (VPA), University of Vermont, The Tarrant Foundation and Vita-Learn to provide professional development for technology rich classrooms. The proposed Vermont E-Learning Project takes place within this school year and is seeking 6 schools from around the state to take part in the program offerings. Use the link above to view the application for interested schools. Read the application carefully and understand that this is not a "grant" being given to schools, but an opportunity for schools to take part in a robust program that aims at changing teacher practice when technology is easily accessible by students. The schools will be chosen from the Vita-Learn regions, with one of the larger regions having two schools chosen. Note: While this is a Title IID funded program, this aspect of the program is being managed by the grantees above and questions should be directed to Ellen Kane (VPA) at ekane@vpaonline.org or (802) 229-0547. Deadline for applications was Friday, October 23, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.

Learning Network of Vermont (LNV) Upgrade
The Learning Network of Vermont (LNV) is a school-based video-conferencing system that supports school-to-school collaborations, virtual field trips, distance learning opportunities and access to meetings/trainings for staff members. Use the link above for an overview about the new LNV upgrade and what it means for Vermont schools, then check out the LNV Web site. NOTE: This upgrade remains incomplete.   ARRA: Title IID ANTICIPATED Allocations Released for FY 2010 and ARRAClicking this link will open a PDF document. Adobe Reader is required. To download a FREE version of Adobe Reader, click on the yellow Get Acrobat Reader icon toward the bottom of page.
Updated 5/11/09: Use this link to view a table of figures that represent ANTICIPATED allocations in Title IID funds for FY 2010, which will come on July 1, 2009. ARRA funds are also indicated here and as of May 6, the Vermont Department of Education has been notified that July 1 is the ARRA date on Title IID as well. Originally, it was reported that Title IID ARRA funds would have a shorter "life span" than regular allocation monies. That has been updated and ARRA funds under Title IID are 27 month funds, expiring in September of 2011. These numbers should be used for planning purposes only, as they may change between now and when they are received by the LEA. NOTE: These represent two separate allocations of federal dollars and will be tracked separately as well. Also note that ARRA funds are a ONE TIME allocation. When planning, make sure to plan for activities that can be later sustained with other funding sources. For questions pertaining to Title II, contact Peter Drescher.

Information Technology Grade ExpectationsClicking this link will open a PDF document. Adobe Reader is required. To download a FREE version of Adobe Reader, click on the yellow Get Acrobat Reader icon toward the bottom of page.
A grade expectation (GE) is a stated objective that relates directly to a Vermont standard and associated evidences. A GE differentiates performance on content knowledge or skills between adjacent grade levels and describe clearly what students will do to show that they understand a designated concept. As a set, GEs should lead to focused, coherent, and developmentally appropriate instruction without narrowing the curriculum and can be used for local curriculum and assessment development.

The GEs also are offered in the following formats:

NOTE: To view GE information for other content areas, go to the Curriculum & Assessment Web page.

Educational Technology Performance TasksClicking this link will open a PDF document. Adobe Reader is required. To download a FREE version of Adobe Reader, click on the yellow Get Acrobat Reader icon toward the bottom of page.
Designed to support the Technology Grade Expectations (GEs), these content-neutral tasks can support classroom level determination of students’ knowledge and skills related to the GEs. The original performance tasks, created by a group of teachers in the northwestern part of Vermont through support from VITA-Learn, were the foundation for the Technology Grade Expectations. These revised tasks will be supplemented with “model” tasks geared toward numerous grade levels and content areas in summer 2005.

One of the on-going projects supported by the Department of Education is the Web portal that houses the VTCITE. This site is a rich resource of discussions and resources dedicated to the integration of technology in all curriculum areas.
