Health Education Grade Expectations by Grade Cluster or Content (Updated 10/1/08)
In 2007, Vermont’s Health Grade Expectations (GEs) were revised to reflect current research and best practice. It is hoped that these revised Health GEs will enhance the assessment, curriculum, and instruction work of schools and teachers. Like the Grade Level Expectations in other content areas, the Health Grade Cluster Expectations are more specific statements of the Vermont standards in Vermont Framework of Standards & Learning Opportunities. However, unlike the Grade Level Expectations which delineate specific grade levels, these grade expectations are organized by Grade Clusters (pre-K and K; 1 and 2; 3 and 4; 5 and 6; 7 and 8; and high school). The purpose of using grade clusters is to provide additional flexibility for alignment of local curriculum and local comprehensive assessment systems.

Health Education Sample Assessment Items
These documents provide health educators and district curriculum committees with additional resources to help them develop, revise and improve their health education curricula using the Vermont Health Grade Cluster Expectations (GCEs). This work represents an integration of the Health Education GEs, the Vermont Health Education Guidelines for Curriculum and Assessment, the 2006 revision of the National Health Education Standards, and the health assessment items from the work of the State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards (SCASS). |

Health Education Grade Expectations
NOTE: This older version of the Health GEs is provided for reference purposes only.
A grade expectation (GE) is a stated objective that relates directly to a Vermont standard and associated evidences. A GE differentiates performance on content knowledge or skills between adjacent clusters of grade levels (i.e., PK-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10). GEs describe clearly what students will do to show that they understand a designated science concept. As a set, GEs should lead to focused, coherent, and developmentally appropriate instruction without narrowing the curriculum and can be used for local curriculum and assessment development.
