This monthly, electronic resource is intended to keep Vermont educators and youth-serving professionals up-to-date on resources, professional development and grant/funding opportunities, and other issues related to healthy and safe schools. NOTE: The bulletin is not published during the summer months.

Spring is kicking off with a healthy selection of workshops, institutes, and other professional learning events. Many new and substantial grant opportunities are also available for wellness in schools. Apply to join the Vermont Community of Health Educators for 2013-2014. Come out to one of three community film and discussion nights, sponsored by VTAHPERD.

In this new year edition of the e-bulletin readers will find a new Agency of Education guidance document for health education, plus a list of resources available for loan from the Agency of Education. The American Academy of Pediatrics has published a position statement about the importance of recess for child development and learning. Professional development opportunities include a tennis workshop for PE teachers, “Great Expectations” workshops and “UMatter” suicide prevention and awareness workshops.

This issue highlights information and professional development for school food service programs. The Vermont Department of Health shares new epidemiologic and prevention information about pertussis. This issue also includes a new Adapted Physical Education Frequently Asked Questions document from the VT DOE and a new Parent Engagement in School Heath resource from CDC. A grant from NEA may be a great way to help school wellness access professional development.

This issue of the e-bulletin provides information about a new law requiring schools to implement a bullying prevention policy, plus how to engage in collection of 2013 YRBS data. Also, look for an application for the Champions for Healthy Kids Grant and Agency of Education grants to support schools working on a multi-tiered systems of support.

VT schools are invited to apply for the U.S. Green Ribbon School Award and PE teachers are called to provide feedback on a draft of the revised national standards. The fall workshop schedule is packed with great options through December. Substantial grant competitions are now open to VT schools for Farm to School and Safe Routes to School infrastructure.
