PROGRAMS & SERVICES:
SECONDARY SCHOOL RENEWAL & INNOVATION
(Updated 1/26/07)

OVERVIEW
""

The Secondary School Renewal and Innovation program works to assist schools in implementing innovative approaches to secondary school renewal.

The program has worked closely with the Vermont High School Task Force, which was created in 1999 by the State Board of Education to examine the status of the state's secondary education system; the group completed its initial mission in 2002. The Task Force developed a set of recommendations and tools to help guide the secondary school renewal process; the Secondary School Renewal and Innovation program focuses on helping the education community implement those strategies. Among the recommendations is the creation of a Center for Secondary School Renewal, which would provide resources and technical assistance to secondary schools and vocation-technical education centers working to integrate innovative practices. The complete set of the Task Force's recommendations are outlined in the
High Schools on the Move guidebook.

High Schools on the Move: Renewing Vermont's Commitment to Quality Secondary Education
In 1999, the State Board of Education charged the Department of Education to convene a task force to address critical issues facing Vermont’s secondary schools. This document, based on the work of the task force, presents a vision for secondary school renewal and innovation in the state. It serves as a call to action and a toolkit to help educators and communities chart their own courses for secondary school change.
