There are two models
of truancy intervention that have demonstrated effectiveness for Vermont youth: truancy
protocol teams and intensive mentoring projects.
Truancy Protocol
Teams
This team model seeks to develop policies and protocols that inform parents of school
absences and guide intervention by the team. Team members generally include school
officials, social and rehabilitation service staff, the local truancy officer, and
the state district attorney. Each school and community designs the sequence and nature
of the interventions to fit the local needs.
Intensive Mentoring
Projects
This model provide support to the family and the young person to remedy the problems
that are causing the truancy. The program activities may include family visits, mediation
between the school and family, referral to other services and social activities for
the student with the mentor. Both professional and volunteer mentors are used.
