COVID-19 Recommendations and Considerations For Vermont Schools

With the end of the COVID-19 State of Emergency in June, Vermont Supervisory Unions (SU/SDs) and Independent Schools are operating under advisory recommendations and considerations from the State of Vermont. School districts and independent schools have the responsibility and authority to set requirements and procedures to safeguard the health of students, staff and their broader community.

This page contains formal advisory memos, background information and reference documents, and more specific recommendations and considerations for individual topics, programs and activities. Finally, while of the AOE’s COVID-19 guidance lost legal force and effect with the end of the executive order and has been rescinded, many documents have been preserved for [reference purposes].

This page will be updated frequently.

Recommendations and Considerations

The below health recommendations are issued jointly by the AOE and the Health Department for topic-, program-, or activity-specific questions or needs. Additional recommendations will be added as the situation warrants.

Recommendations for Food Service and School Meals:

The Agency of Education and Department of Health Recommend that SU/SDs and independent schools follow CDC guidance for food service and school meals, including the following:

  • Mask wear during food prep and service.
  • Frequent cleaning of food prep and service areas, and frequent hand washing by students and food service staff.

Additionally, the Vt. Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that schools pay special attention to distancing when students are eating in groups unmasked. Accordingly, schools may want to consider continuing use of cohorting for meal times or eating in classrooms to help ensure distancing and smaller group size, as long as this does not impinge on instructional time.
