Register for Child Nutrition Programs Summer Institute

Audience: School Food Service, Administrators, Principals, Business Managers, Nurses, Farm to School Coordinators, Child/Adult Care Providers
Registration for the Child Nutrition Summer Institute is now open. This year’s Summer Institute will take place at St. Johnsbury Academy from August 7-11, 2017.  This year we are offering over 50 half-day, full-day and multi-day classes. You may register for just one class, a whole day, or multiple days. The registration deadline for most classes is July 26, 2017, however, the deadline for some classes (including the New Manager’s class) is June 30, 2017. Early registration deadlines are noted in the class descriptions.

Northeast Kingdom Collaborative Learning Group

Audience: All
Vermont Professional Learning Network (VT PLN) is facilitating a collaborative learning group on August 16-17, 2017 at Lake Region High School in Orleans, Vermont. The goal of the group is to come to a common understanding about the role of performance assessment in personalized, proficiency-based education.  The two days will be steeped in design as teams of administrators and teacher leaders develop products and processes that will be shared with the group. Examples of products might be specific performance assessments, student-designed learning projects, learning progressions, system development, or rubrics. There is no fee to participate, but space is limited. There are eight spaces remaining. Sign up for the collaborative learning group.

New Website Helps Vermont Schools Host Safety Fairs; Grant Programs Offered

Audience: Teachers, Teacher Leaders, Curriculum Coordinators, Principals
The Youth Safety Council of Vermont (YSCVT)  in collaboration with Mt. Abraham Union High School has published a how-to guide for Vermont high schools that describes how Mt. Abe produced a campus-wide safety fair showcasing safety knowledge from across the state. Heritage Toyota has also created a grant program to encourage Vermont schools to produce their own safety fairs. Learn more about how to produce your own safety fair.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Training of Trainers

These two trainings will be held October 17, 2017 at the Fireside Inn in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. There are two training choices. A half-day Gatekeeper Training will be held 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. for teachers, mental health counselors, ministers, youth workers, primary care professionals, law enforcement, first responders, parents, or others interested. Cost is $50. A full-day Training of Trainers will be held 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. which will equip attendees with skills to facilitate Umatter Suicide Prevention Awareness workshops in their community or place of work. Social Cognition 1

This 11-day graduate-level course is designed to provide participants with a conceptual understanding of the theoretical frameworks underlying social cognition assessment and intervention for individuals presenting with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and related socio-cognitive deficits. This course is an introduction to functional and everyday application of interventions, strategies, and supports for improving social understanding and implementing social cognition groups. This course draws heavily on the historical development of social cognitive theory, Theory of Mind, the biological underpinnings of socio-cognitive deficits and current research in best practices for supporting and coaching students struggling with socio-cognitive challenges. K-12 Classroom teachers, special education teachers, reading specialists, and content area teachers are encouraged to enroll. The course will be held at the Stern Center for Language and Learning in Williston from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on dates between September 19, 2017 and December 5, 2017. Administrators - Phone It In

This one-day administrator workshop facilitated by Mike Berry will be held August 11, 2017 at the Champlain Valley Educator Development Center i-Classroom in Colchester from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The session includes breakfast and lunch. Bring your Smartphone or Video Tool and learn how to easily video, video-edit and have you posts look professional, while sharing your school or district success story.  A great way to share what you are seeing with teachers in their classrooms or to self-analyze your leadership in meetings. Register for Phone It In.
