Weekly Field Memo

The Agency of Education created the weekly field memo to keep subscribers up-to-date with current education policy, state-wide education initiatives, and official messages from the AOE. The field memo may also includes education-related items from other state agencies. And at our discretion, we may include other events or information from other organizations not directly affiliated with the AOE. The field memo is not intended to serve as a newsletter.

Comprehensive Assessment Recovery Effort Training Opportunity

Audience: Members of School-Based Education Support Teams or Targeted Teams Attending as a Team
Training opportunity for school members of education support teams sponsored by the Vermont Freemasons, Vermont Agency of Education, and Vermont Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs. This training is designed to provide strategies for the improved and efficient functioning of a school’s Educational Support Team or Targeted Team. The two-day workshop builds educators skills in identifying at-risk students and providing appropriate guidance. There is no cost to participants. There are two regional training opportunities. Participants only have to attend one two-day training. The North training will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 19-20, 2018 at Green Mountain Technical Center in Hyde Park. The South training will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 22-23, 2018 at the NewsBank Conference Center in Chester. Endorsement Revision Group Members Wanted for Social Studies

Audience: Vermont Educators
The Vermont Standards Board for Professional Educators (VSBPE) has scheduled to revise the Social Studies endorsement. The process entails meeting for a day sometime during the third week of March 2018. At that time, through AOE facilitation, stakeholders from the field will draft a new Social Studies endorsement for VSBPE approval. If you are interested in participating in the stakeholder facilitation, please contact Terry Reilly.

Practice-Based Coach Training

Audience: Early Childhood Trainers, Coaches, Consultants, Instructors
This training opportunity will be held on January 24 and 25, 2018 at the Hilton, Burlington, VT, provided by the Vermont Agency of Education, is for those individuals who provide professional development, instruction or coaching to the Early Childhood field. Practice-Based Coaching is a cyclical process for supporting teachers’ use of effective teaching practices that lead to positive outcomes for children. Practice-Based coaching uses research-based strategies to provide tools and support to be utilized within the context of a collaborative partnership. Register for Practice-Based Coach Training.

Vermont School Safety Center Newsletter

Audience: Superintendents, Principals, School Crisis Planning Team Members
The Vermont School Safety Center Newsletter is designed to inform our school safety partners of on-going and future school emergency preparedness initiatives. This edition contains information about the 2017 Governor's School Safety Conference, School Safety Month, School Safety Planning and Training Efforts, and a note from the Department of Public Safety Commissioner.

What If Wednesday: Family Reunification

Audience: Superintendents, Principals, School Crisis Planning Team Members
This week's What If Wednesday will be on family reunification. This school safety training is designed to stimulate a conversation about school emergency preparedness. Participants should read the summary of the “fictional” school safety incident and then answer the multiple-choice question with the appropriate response action to be taken for the specific emergency.

U.S. Department of Education 2018-2019 School Ambassador Fellowship Applications Open

Are you interested in being a voice in education dialogue at a national level? The 2018-2019 U.S. Department of Education Fellowship is designed to bring school and classroom expertise to the Department. Other goals include: create a community of teachers, principals, and other school staff members who share expertise and collaborate with leaders in the federal government on national education issues; involved educators who work daily with students and teachers in developing policies that affect classrooms and schools; and highlight practitioners' voices and expand educators' critical leadership at the national, state and local levels. Book Love Foundation Classroom Library Grant Application

This grant is for full-time teachers interested in getting a classroom library. Applicants should have "demonstrated a commitment to personalized independent reading, and have started the process of building a classroom library." Rock Solid Foundations Training

Want the children in your care to get along with others, feel secure, and be confident, engaged learners? This workshop teaches skills to care providers so they can enhance the social-emotional development of young children. Learn ways to promote children’s success through positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues, supportive environments where every child feels good about learning, and intentional teaching of social-emotional skills that help children manage expectations and routines and reduce challenging behaviors. Free workshops and mentoring throughout the state are sponsored by the Vermont Department for Children and Families and Vermont Child Care Industry and Career Council. Promoting Personal Health and Safety Through the Prevention of Injury and Violence

This online course, Promoting Personal Health and Safety Through the Prevention of Injury and Violence, is offered as one of a series of courses by the Vermont Higher Education Collaborative toward health education endorsement. This course is designed to address concepts, knowledge, and skills related to promoting personal health and safety through injury and violence prevention. The course begins March 4, 2018. The cost is $795.00 to take the course for two graduate credits or $495 to audit the course for no credit. Forging Connections for Fluency Instruction: How Research Informs Practice

This workshop will focus on a crucial challenge in elementary literacy education: how to help atypical readers achieve reading fluency in order to support comprehension. Participants will take away five teaching techniques for building fluency in several dimensions of literacy education. Cost is $50 per person. Flynn Center Teacher Workshop

"Scott Kettner and Carnival Caravan Workshop: Fresh Approaches to Teaching Folk Music" is one of the after-school teacher workshops held at the Flynn on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 4-6 p.m. Conducted by master drummer/percussionist Scott Kettner, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn the rhythms of New Orleans' and Brazil's music traditions as participants engage with the Brazilian folk music of Maracatu de Baque Virado and its relationship to the New Orleans second line and Mardi Gras Indian rhythms. Work-Based Learning Providing Safe, Legal and Effective Opportunities for Students, Schools, and Businesses

This course is offered by Castleton University’s Center for Schools and is designed to provide participants with the core knowledge base for operating under the Work-Based Learning educator’s license endorsement in the state of Vermont or other positions that support the implementation of some or all areas of study. The Work-Based Learning course will be offered in two locations by the following instructors: Dave Culver, Thursdays 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. from January 25, 2018 to May 17, 2018 at The Howard Dean Education Center in Springfield; Rich Tulikangas, March 17, 2018 to May 19, 2018, online and in-person at Vermont Tech, Williston. Upcoming Coursework in Applied Behavior Analysis

Beginning in January, VT-HEC will be offering coursework in Applied Behavioral Analysis I: Introduction to Concepts and Principles. This course will provide the learner with an introduction to the principles and procedures of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Upon successful completion of this course, students will understand the vocabulary of ABA and how environmental events influence human behavior. Students will also learn how to measure behavior in applied settings, how to structure the learning environment to increase pro-social behaviors and/or decrease maladaptive behaviors, and an introduction to the process of performing functional behavior assessments.The course begins January 13, so please register soon.
