Restorative Approaches Grant Funds Opportunity

The Agency of Education is offering a competitive one-year, state-level grant for schools to implement or adopt restorative approaches as a part of a whole-school social-emotional program. Professional Learning: Master Schedule Development
Audience: Superintendents, Principals, and SU/SD and school leadership teams
District Management Group is putting on two professional development sessions that will support district and school leadership teams in designing and creating new master schedules based on best practices. DMG has partnered with the Vermont Agency of Education to provide this professional learning opportunity to districts and supervisory unions in the state free of charge. The sessions will cover best practices for optimizing building schedules, creating schedules that support special education staff and other interventions, and using technical strategies for scheduling. These sessions will be collaborative and engaging and will involve extensive discussions within teams and with peers across the state. One session will focus on elementary scheduling and the other will focus on secondary scheduling. Participants will have the opportunity to attend the two sessions in either the north or south of the state.

Work Sessions: Vermont Arts Learning Target Bank
Audience: K-12 Visual Art and Music Teachers
Registration is open for the Vermont Arts Learning Target Bank In-Person Work Sessions. In this work session, art or music teachers will learn a process for unpacking the National Core Arts Standards into learning targets and receive an introduction to the Vermont Arts Learning Target Bank, which contains learning targets that can be used for both instruction and assessment. Participants will learn how to use the learning target bank to 1) build proficiency scales and 2) how to use the learning targets to build assessments and assessment tools. Finally, participants will explore the Model Cornerstone Assessments as examples of NCAS aligned performance assessments. Time will be provided for whole group learning, discussion, and collaborative work time in breakout groups. K-12 art or music educators welcome. Space is limited. Annual Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition for Grade Eight Students
Every year, Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home runs the Lincoln Essay Competition for 8th graders throughout Vermont. This year, in place of one statewide competition, there are now four regions with a first, second, and third place prize for each. First place winners receive $600, second place $300, third place $200, and up to four honorable mentions of $100 which the judges may choose from anywhere in the state. Professional Development: Autism Spectrum Disorder course
Registration is open for Autism Spectrum Disorder: Stimulating Language, Social Communication and Social Emotional Learning from Birth through Third Grade. This graduate-level course by the Stern Center for Language and Learning focuses on evidence-based assessment, intervention, and practices for children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through hands-on activities and course readings, students will explore methods for supporting social-emotional learning and managing interfering behaviors. Three graduate credits are optional. Registration due by 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019.

Professional Development: Digital Media Methodologies
Registration is open for Digital Media Methodologies for PK-12 Teachers, Champlain College’s new hybrid graduate course starting February 2, 2019. Through weekly online seminars and four on-campus studio intensives, Digital Media Methodologies provides introductory experiences in the theoretical pedagogy and practical implementation of digital media arts instruction for PK-12 educators, library media specialists and school/district administrators. This hybrid course is perfect for art teachers, elementary classroom teachers, and core content teachers alike.
