Please register to join the Vermont Agency of Education’s VTmtss Team and Partnerships for Literacy and Learning to hear about the 2019 edition of the VTmtss Field Guide. During our 90 minutes together, we will share how the Five Components have been refined to address recent shifts in Vermont’s educational landscape. We will provide opportunities to discuss with colleagues the important connections between state level guidelines and current research, and how VTmtss can support a culture of continuous improvement and decision making for excellence and equity in your schools.

Equity Literacy Resources

There is a new resource on the Agency of Education website that may be helpful to all educators, but especially those who are applying for the Equity Literacy Grants. This document, Equity Literacy Resources, includes relevant tools, articles, videos and potential partner organizations that may support educators as they work to create and sustain equitable learning environments for all students.

New Resource: Educational Equity and Diversity Professional Development Providers (2019)

The Agency of Education has posted a list of vendors who provide various forms of professional development that address educational equity, diversity and/or culturally responsive practices. Each vendor responded to a Request for Information (RFI) in 2018; vendors were included on this list after demonstrating that their work addresses educational equity and diversity. Results-Oriented Program Approval Standards Revision Group
Audience: Administrators, Teachers, Educator Preparation Program Faculty
The Education Quality Team is seeking people to participate in a revision of the standards by which educator preparation programs and alternate routes to educator licensure are reviewed through the Vermont Agency of Education’s Results-Oriented Program Approval (ROPA) process. This group will meet 6-8 times, approximately monthly, through the rest of this year. The meetings will be held at the AOE in Barre/Montpelier and will also be accessible by phone. Space is limited. Youth Art Fair of Vermont
Do you have a student, or students, who love making art and dream of further education in the arts? Would they like more experience selling their wares while raising money for their education? On Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, Paine Mountain School District and Safe Art will present the Youth Art Fair of Vermont. This event is free for everyone. Nominate a Humanities Educator for the Swenson Award
Nominations for the Victor R. Swenson Humanities Educator Award are due by June 14, 2019. This $1,000 award recognizes a Vermont educator in grades 6 through 12 who exemplifies excellence in the teaching of the humanities. Nominate an educator online.

Professional Development: Orton-Gillingham in Rutland
Registration is open for the Stern Center for Language and Learning’s Introduction to the Orton-Gillingham Approach course in Rutland, VT. The Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach is the underlying foundation of all multisensory, structured literacy instruction. In this 5-day course, participants will gain an understanding of the OG Approach and how to develop an OG lesson. Participants will learn about the reading brain and dyslexia, phonology, spelling patterns, the history of the English language and morphology. Registration due by June 24, 2019. Grant funding towards tuition is available.

1st Annual Youth Summit: May 30, 2019, at Vermont Technical College from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event is organized by the Youth Advocacy Council, a group comprised of youth and young adults who educate and empower individuals with differing abilities. EDUCATE – ELEVATE – EMPOWER. This is an event FOR youth BY youth. The Keynote presentation is by Matthew Shapiro, and workshops are focused on the areas of self-advocacy, employment/careers, bullying/harassment and transition to adulthood. Umatter activities for participating schools will be occurring during scheduled workshops. It is a packed agenda dedicated to youth who are engaged in advocacy and leadership activities. Space is limited—there is availability for 150 youth and young adults, and 50 adults who are actively supporting attendees and the intention of the day. Register by May 10, 2019.

Castleton University Center for Schools Summer Course Registration is now open. There are over 100 graduate and undergraduate courses built specifically for K-12 educators. Professional Learning: Literacy Workshop
Registration is open for Using a Literacy Workshop Model as an Inclusionary Approach (Grades K-6). During this workshop, participants will dig into this differentiated learning time to consider how teachers can use data to plan and implement a balance of small group and independent work that will best meet the varied instructional needs of all of their students. Juliet King asks participants to bring student data for use in planning. Text: The Literacy Teacher's Playbook is included. This will be at the Hampton Event Center, Colchester, VT on August 13, 2019.

TDI Summer Camp
TDI Summer Camp is a one- or two-week, sleep-away or day summer program at Northern Vermont University (formerly Johnson State College), from June 23-29 and/or June 30-July 6, 2019. TDI combines the relaxed atmosphere of a summer camp with new academic and creative opportunities for advanced, gifted students who are entering grades 4-9 (No testing required). Students have fun with peers while exploring a wide variety of topics, including Computer Game Design, CSI Science, TDI Broadway, Art Extravaganza, Writing and Laughing, Collaborative Storytelling, Web Design, Improv, Chess and Science Through the Ages. Overnight and commuter options are available.
