Professional Development for School Nurses/Associate School Nurses: Immunizations, Mental Health and Trauma Informed Care
Audience: Superintendents, Principals, Local Standards Boards
Maintaining essential school health services requires that School Nursing personnel participate in ongoing professional development due to changes in health, medicine and nursing sciences. Please plan for school nurses to participate in the many free and low cost options available to them. These can be found: 1) in the weekly SN Bulletin that goes to all School Nursing personnel on Mondays, 2) retaking the New School Nurse Orientation (5-10 hr. self-paced) with new or revised topics listed in the title of this message, 3) Care Coordination for Students with Chronic Health Conditions located on the National Association of School Nurses website, and 4) with your local Public Health School Liaison Nurse.

School Register Reminder
Audience: Principals, Superintendents, Registrars
Pursuant to 16 V.S.A. § 1324, Superintendents are required to examine the School Register presented to them by each school and verify the accuracy of the information, and then notify the Secretary in writing that the Register is complete and accurate. This documentation can be sent to: Agency of Education, DMAT, 219 North Main Street, Suite 402, Barre, VT 05641.

The 2019 Core Transition Teams Annual Conference will be held on Oct. 15, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Killington Grand, Killington, VT. This professional development day is dedicated to improving the transition to life after high school for students with disabilities. This year’s theme: Empowering Youth and Families in Transitions to Adulthood. Details to follow. Lunch provided. Let’s support our interagency teams through opportunities to share resources, learn from each other and create meaningful and effective transitions to adulthood for students with disabilities! Lead in School Drinking Water Testing Program and School Tap Survey
Audience: Superintendents, Principals, Independent School Headmasters
This legislative session, the Vermont General Assembly passed a law requiring testing for and remediation of lead in drinking water in all school and childcare centers in Vermont. Testing will be conducted by region according to a schedule developed by the Vermont Department of Health. The first step for SD/SUs and Independent Schools will be to complete an inventory of the taps for each school in the district and complete the online tap inventory survey by Friday, June 28, 2019, at 4 p.m. Consult the memo on Vermont's Statewide Lead in School Drinking Water Testing Program and School Tap Survey for more information.

Presenting Abenaki Culture in the Classroom, Aug. 8-10, 2019
Through lectures and experiential learning, Vermont Abenaki Artists Association scholars, historians and culture bearers present this vibrant regional culture that reaches back nearly 13,000 years and continues today. In its third year, this course is designed to provide teachers with a deeper understanding of how indigenous culture continues into the 21st century and how to support Abenaki and Native students while presenting American history. 30% off professional development course: Social Cognition 1
Registration is open for Social Cognition 1, a professional development course by the Stern Center for Language and Learning. This course introduces interventions, strategies and supports for improving social understanding and implementing social cognition groups. Participants will develop social cognition assessment plans and explore the biological and theoretical processes behind social understanding. Three graduate credits are optional through St. Michael’s College. Registration due July 8, 2019.

Teaching Strategies GOLD® Online: Introductory Training
This 2-day face-to-face training is for new or novice users of the Teaching Strategies GOLD® Online preschool assessment system. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 31 and Aug. 1, 2019 at the Holiday Inn in Burlington, Vermont. Registration available online. There is a minimum of 15 participants for the training to run and a limit of 25 participants total.
