Two Important Updates to School Nursing Practice
Audience: Superintendents, Principals, and School Nurses
First, please find the new interpretation of FERPA specific to School Nursing and the crucial role of care coordination, from the National Public Health Law Network here: Data Privacy in School Nursing: Navigating the Complex Landscape of Data Privacy Laws (Part 1). Second, updates to Vermont’s vision and hearing screening recommendations can be found in the Standards of Practice: School Health Services Manual (Section #26). The change supports compliance with VT’s Testing Sight and Hearing law (16 V.S.A. § 1422). It is recommended that schools work to comply with this update for the upcoming 2019/2020 school year. Periodic updates align with our on-going interagency agreement with the Vermont Agency of Education: Memorandum of Understanding: School Health Services ([2009]-2023).

Toolkit Available to Address Youth Vaping Epidemic
In preparation for back to school, the Burlington Office of Local Health and Vermont Department of Health Tobacco Control Program would like to call your attention to the Electronic Vapor Education Toolkit for Schools to support administrators, nurses, SAPs, staff and faculty in their efforts to prevent youth vaping use, promote cessation, establish and enforce protective policies. You can find the toolkit on the Vermont Department of Health Tobacco pages under Resources -> Provide Facts on E-cigarettes and Vaping.

Online Practicum for Wilson Reading System Level 1 Certification
Registration is open for the Wilson Reading System® Level I Certification online practicum hosted by the Stern Center for Language and Learning. The Wilson Reading System (WRS) Level I certification program is designed to prepare teachers to effectively implement WRS Steps 1-6. Practicum participants will work with a Wilson Credentialed Trainer to receive five web-based observations to strengthen and support their work as they teach their practicum student. Registration due by Sept. 6, 2019.

New Work-Based Learning Coordinator Program
VT-HEC announces a new Work-Based Learning Coordinator Program. Courses are competency-based and address a variety of topics related to WBL as a flexible pathway. Registration is open for the Fall 2019 course, Work-Based Learning: Providing Effective Opportunities for Students, Schools and Businesses, taught by Rich Tulikangas (Director of Vermont’s Linking Learning to Careers (LLC) project), beginning Oct. 5, 2019, at CVMC, Berlin VT. Artists in Schools Grants - Vermont Arts Council
Artists in Schools funds support artist residencies in schools. Eligible schools and school districts may apply to the Vermont Arts Council grant program. Applications open Aug. 12, 2019, and will close when the funds are exhausted. Funds contribute to artist fees (at least in part) for up to ten days at the rate of $250 per day. A list of eligible artists may be found on the Teaching Artist Roster. Artists collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure that the residency meets classroom learning objectives. Preference is given to projects that align with Council priorities.
