Montpelier, Vt. – Interim Secretary of Education Heather Bouchey today issued the following statement:

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the shooting of three Palestinian college students visiting Burlington over the weekend. My thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery are with the victims and their families.”

“Whenever violent incidents like this happen, I worry about our kids. Vermont has a long and rich history of opening its doors to people from around the world. Our student bodies are diverse, and incidents like these can make our students feel unsafe. We must do everything we can to make sure all Vermont students feel secure, welcome, and able to learn.”

“In times like these, it is even more important that we build a culture of inclusivity in our communities and in our schools. By listening to one another and respecting our differing perspectives and experiences we will build bridges and ensure that Vermont is a welcoming place to live, work, and learn.”
