This is the annual report of the number of students approved for free and reduced-price
meals in each school in each School Food Authority (SFA). A School Food Authority
(SFA) is the entity responsible for operating the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). In Vermont, the SFA is at the Supervisory
Union level for public schools. In some cases, there is more than one school district
within a School Food Authority. State approved and state recognized independent
schools can take part in the school meals programs as their own SFA or as sites under
a public SFA.
Starting in School Year 22-23, the state has required all public schools to offer meals at
no charge to all students. State funds cover these costs. State-approved independent
schools that offer meals at no charge to all students receive state funds to cover the
cost of providing meals to students attending on public tuition. This means that meals
are being provided at no charge to all students at all public schools and at some
independent schools. A few independent schools charge students for meals. At these
schools, state funds pay for the student’s share of reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
